Wednesday xx. xxx. 2012 – Martin Haugmo Iversen, – The efficacy of metomidate, AQUI – S VET and FINQUEL as anaesthetics for cod (Gadus morhua L.). More info to come.
Abstract. Cod (225 g) were exposed to seawater (8.6 oC) containing different concentrations of metomidate from 0 to 10 mg L-1, Aqui – S(iso-eugenol) and FinquelÒ (MS-222) from 0 to 100 mg L-1. All anaesthetic concentrations were mixed and expressed as mg L-1 in relation to the active substance of the various anaesthetics. Times to stage 4 (loss of reflex activity), 5 (respiratory movement ceases) and stage 3; total recovery of equilibrium were measured to nearest second. Stage 5 occurred after 7 and 12 minutes of 100 and 75 mg iso-eugenol/ L-1 (Aqui-S), after 12 and 18 min. of 100 and 75 mg L-1 FinquelÒ, and after 16 min. of 10 mg L-1 metomidate. FinquelÒ and metomidate induced anaesthesia more rapid and efficient at higher dosage (75 – 100 mg L-1) compared to Aqui – S. However Aqui – Sinduced anaesthesia at lower concentrations. The recovery times for cod exposed for Aqui – S was nine to 30 times longer than in those exposed to FinquelÒ at similar dosages. All anaesthetics were deemed as useful for cod. This study showed that FinquelÒ and metomidateweremore suitable for cod at higher dosage with rapid anaesthesia and larger safety margin compared to Aqui-S. The use of Aqui-S on cod at higher dosages (as 75 – 100 mg iso-eugenol L-1) should only be done under constant supervision, and with no longer exposure than 2-3 min..
